Carilo

Carilo is a small and beautiful beach town about 400km away from Buenos Aires. It’s located on a nice strip of sand next to the ocean along with several other beach towns such as Pinamar, Ostende, Villa Gesell and Mar de las Pampas. It’s only a five minutes ride from one town to the next one.  Carilo is surrounded by a beautiful forest, the beaches are close to some interesting dunes and the town offers a lot of shops and restaurants. It’s a wonderful location for vacationing -it can get very busy in the summer- and photography.

The architecture is quite spectacular, you can find big -and very expensive- beach houses in a wide display of styles. Stone, bricks, wood and several other materials are used. Most houses have a view to the forest or the ocean.  If you like beach architecture this is a fantastic place, just stroll around the unpaved roads of the forest and discover the mansions as you walk around.

The forest is the most representative icon of Carilo. Pines and several foreign species create a very dense forest of tall trees that provide fresh air and a lot of shade from the Sun. You can easily walk into the forest and it’s a very safe place to walk around and take pictures. Don’t worry about getting lost as the forest is big but there are plenty of roads and the Ocean is a huge reference point that nobody can miss.

The beaches are short and plain, there are no rocks, piers, jetties or coastal trees. Just a strip of yellow sand and the ocean. Some small dunes as the ones in the first picture can be found. It’s easy to just drive a few miles north or south to find bigger and nicer dunes. Those can be full of people with ATV vehicles in the summer but will be mostly empty in the winter and are very good for photography.

The bach without rocks, piers or trees can be a challenge to photograph, without features the sky is important, some beautiful clouds along with the waves can create some drama in a featureless scene. I like to play with different exposure times for the waves, from action freezing short speeds to very long exposures that turn everything into a thick fog. Waves are very dynamic so a small change in shutter speed can create a completely different mood in the photo.

Carilo is a wonderful place to visit, the forest is really fantastic and the beach is quiet, simple and beautiful. You have several excellent lodging options and a very nice downtown to shop and eat. It’s a place that can be full of people and very expensive in the summer and I find it wonderful to visit during the offseason.
